It was heart-breaking to see such scenes of devastation, as the citizens of La Serenissima struggled to assess the extent of all the damage. Then, just before Christmas, Venice was subjected again to a few more exceptional high tides.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8254\" style=\"width: 858px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8254\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8254\" src=\"https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Venice.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"848\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Venice.png 848w, https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Venice-528x277.png 528w, https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Venice-600x315.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The acqua alta flooding &#8211; during and after<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Much of what was written and broadcast at the time, however, emphasised the flooding and the damage, but failed to report the situation accurately. Story-hungry journalists, focussing only on the drama, were interested only in their click-bait tales and not in the lives of ordinary Venetians. The Civil Protection co-ordinated assistance and relief for the areas that were hardest hit. Electricians and technicians from the mainland came in and assisted locals with re-wiring their frazzled electrics, helping to re-start fridges, freezers and anything else that had been affected by the tides. Water taxi drivers helped refuse collectors by removing water-logged furniture, while teams of volunteers went into ground floor accommodation to help wash the salt water off damaged furniture and start on the repair work. Travel forums frequently display posts titled \u201cIs Venice flooded?\u201d and \u201cShould I cancel my holiday in Venice because of the floods?\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8242\" style=\"width: 952px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8242\" class=\"wp-image-8242 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ladies-In-Venice.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"942\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ladies-In-Venice.png 942w, https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ladies-In-Venice-528x252.png 528w, https:\/\/rmgandco.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ladies-In-Venice-600x286.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 942px) 100vw, 942px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Business as usual, despite the floodwaters!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The AVA (the Association of Venetian Hoteliers) held a press conference in Rome to try to make tourists aware that Venice is open for business as usual, but it was obviously not enough. In Venice, however, the floods are caused by the \u201cacqua alta\u201d \u2013 the high tide \u2013 and any residual floods are tidal. Every single resident knows the level at which their house or shop will become flooded, and when they know a high tide is on the way, simply raise barriers and move merchandise and possessions to a higher level that the water isn\u2019t likely to reach. Once the tide goes out and the water levels recede, the barriers come down, the salt from the Lagoon is cleaned off, and life continues as before. Transport continues to run as normal \u2013 occasionally, there will be the odd route deviation, but it is extremely rare that it will be cancelled altogether.
