FOCUS:

#SpreadTheLoveNotTheVirus with ZazaBoom for the NHS

We’d like to introduce you to an exciting new initiative called ZaZaBoom, a creative and philanthropic project set up by fashion designer and creative director, Karen Brost Whyte.  The concept was borne out of her family’s self-isolation during the lockdown in London, and their gradual realisation that their priorities were sadly out of balance.

The family fundraises through their
Just Giving page, raising money for NHS frontline workers, with 100% of proceeds going directly to this cause to buy them PPE and other essentials to ensure their safety at work.

In exchange, anyone donating £25 from the UK (or £30 if outside the UK, to cover the cost of postage) will be sent a handmade ZaZaBoom couture face mask of their choice, created stitch by stitch from Karen's textiles and prints in her archives, which she has been collecting for many years during her time as a fashion designer. A metre here, a scrap there: all the pieces of fabric now have a renewed purpose and have been lovingly up-cycled to become practical products with personality.  In the beginning, all patterns, cutting and sewing was done at the family dining room table by Karen and her daughters, 9 year old Coco and 6 year old Ava, but the project has expanded with demand.  Karen's crusaders now include many local helpers who have dusted down their sewing machines to help.

As well as making masks to gift to anyone who donates over £25 to this worthy cause, ZaZaBoom is also aiming to reach as many NHS heroes as possible, to gift them a free couture face mask of their choice.  If you know someone, nominate them by e-mailing Karen at: zazaboomnhs@gmail.com.

Within the first five days of launching the initiative in March during lockdown, the original fundraising goal of £1000 was reached, with demand going off the scale - including from celebrities and figures in the public eye.  ZaZaBoom has also received donations from as far afield as Italy, France, New York, San Francisco, Hollywood and Australia, sending about 30 masks out per day.

Karen says of the project: “we are aiming to generate as much joy and creativity as we can in these challenging and uncertain times, by creating new products, up-cycling the old, and giving our time  valuable purpose.”

The current target is £10,000 and so far, ZaZaBoom has raised over £6,500.  To donate and receive a couture face mask of your choice, go to: www.bit.ly/DonateToZaZaBoom.
